#Top100of2015: An Introduction

This is part of my Top 100 Songs of 2015 series. To see specific entries click on the following links:

Intro | 100-91 | 90-81 | 80-71 | 70-61 | 60-51 | 50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-11 | 10-1

Another year is coming to a close, which means it's time once again to make an attempt of publishing a list of the top 100 songs of the past 365 days. I made it through #21 on last year's list before coming down with my first ever case of the flu. If you were wondering, my top five songs from 2014 were Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," "All Of Me" by John Legend, "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith, and the Iggy Azalea/Charli XCX collaboration "Fancy." The complete list of all 100 songs from 2014 is compiled in the Spotify playlist located on the side panel.

This year in music saw The Weeknd's domination of the pop charts - the R&B crooner was one of only two artists with multiple Hot 100 number ones - as well as the emergence of rap phenoms Fetty Wap and Silento.

I have compiled my list based on the top 40 songs in each Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart dated 2015 (The January 3, 2015 chart counted even though it was released in 2014; similarly the charts from January 2 and 9, 2016 will not be considered despite being published in 2015).

Starting with songs 100-91 on Tuesday, December 22, I will reveal my year-end list 10 songs at a time for 10 days, including personal notes about each hit. This will conclude with the biggest 10 songs of the year - and a Spotify playlist of all 100 songs - on New Year's Eve. Check back each day at 1 p.m. (EST) for a new post.

Have a blessed and meaningful holiday season, and enjoy the hits!

As a bonus, here are two songs that just missed the list.

102. Heartbeat Song - Kelly Clarkson

Peak: 21 (March 21); Weeks on chart: 20; December 26 position: NR

Both of last year's first two out were songs on the rise; both finished in this year's Top 100. "Heartbeat Song" will not follow suit. This song saw its largest success in the early spring. It is another great tune from the first American Idol; K.C. has proven again and again she belongs in the music industry.

101. Die A Happy Man - Thomas Rhett

Peak: 23 (December 19); Weeks on chart: 12; December 26 position: 25

Thomas Rhett had two country hits this year; "Crash And Burn" had three top-40 weeks in the late summer. "Happy Man" is Rhett's first Billboard Hot Country number-one - the hit is spending its fourth consecutive week, and fifth overall, atop that particular chart. I don't care much for Thomas Rhett personally, but country music listeners apparently love him. If he sticks around the Hot 100 for a month or two in 2016, there's a possibility his hit may crack next year's Top 100.
