The 2015 Summer Lyric Game: An Introduction

After three years of dormancy, I am officially bringing back the Summer Lyric Game, beginning today (May 22) and ending on Labor Day (September 7). This note will introduce the game to those of you who don't already know it, as well as the game's rules and some changes (hopefully improvements) I've made to the game so as not to clog my friends' news feeds on Facebook this year.

....So, what is the Lyric Game?

The Lyric Game, begun by my good friend Joey Meyer in 2008, is simple in concept: the game administrator - in this case, me - posts a line from any song that has ever been written. The first player to respond to the original post with a comment including the song's correct title and artist will receive points. Whoever has the highest accumulated score at the end of the 15-week game period will be crowned as the 2015 Summer Lyric Game Champion.
Past SLG Champions:
Shoshana Osborne (2009)
Janie Sanford (2010)
Amy Vu (2011)
Amy Vu (2012)

Lyric Game rules

1. As soon as you see a lyric, it is fair game on which to play.
2. Comment with the artist and title, or just one of the two if you don't know the other.
3. You don't lose points for guessing wrong.
4. One point apiece goes to the player that guesses the artist and title correctly, with a maximum of two points per lyric (potential special games notwithstanding).
5. NO CHEATING. Google, Bing, AskJeeves, etc. are all off-limits. Only use the power of your mind.

New game elements for 2015

First and foremost, you will be competing for actual money this year. First place winner will receive a $50 AmEx, Visa, or other such gift card. Second place will earn $25, and third place will get $15.

Secondly, to keep from clogging everyone's feeds as much, lyrics will not be individual posts after opening weekend (May 22-25). Each day I will make a post with that day's first lyric. Every successive lyric for the day will appear in the daily post's comment section. For example:

6/28You got me so high, don't you see it in my eyes
Posted by Clayton T. Hurdle on Sunday, June 28, 2015

Between opening weekend (May 22-25) and closing weekend (September 4-7) I will post no more than 20 lyrics per day. In each of the aforementioned weekends, there will be no lyric limits.

Once a week is up, all lyrics not answered correctly will be considered out of play. I may decide to recycle them into later weeks, or I may not.

To give you incentive for playing, every week you attempt to guess at least one lyric you will receive five bonus points. You will earn this bonus whether you are right or wrong, or even if you are not the first to guess a lyric; if you play every week of the game (opening weekend included), this participation bonus will give you 80 easy points.

Lastly, you will be awarded if you finish any week with a point total in the top five. Fifth place will receive two points, fourth place three points, third place four points, second place five points, and first 10 points toward the overall point total. These winners will be announced each week in the weekly update video, as well as the overall top 10 players.

If  you have any questions, concerns or song requests, send me a text or Facebook message. Have fun and lyric on!

The Lyric Game was created by Joey Meyer, who will likely be competing. This in no way means I will let him win.
