#Top100of2017: An Introduction

This is part of my Top 100 Songs of 2017 series. To see specific entries click on the following links:

Another year is coming to a close, which means it's time once again to publish a list of the top 100 songs of the past 365 days. As a refresher, last year the top five songs were "One Dance" by Drake; "Don't Let Me Down" by The Chainsmokers and Daya; Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out"; "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber; and the Sia track "Cheap Thrills." The complete list of all 100 songs from 2016
 can be found here.

This year saw a resurgence of hip-hop as a chart-topping genre. Four rap acts earned their first number one single as a primary artist in 2017; of the 10 songs to top the Hot 100 this year, six tracks were recorded by hip-hop artists. 2017 also stands out as the year Ed Sheeran became a chart-topping pop star in the United States.

I have compiled my list based on the top 50 songs in each Billboard Hot 100 weekly chart dated 2017 (The January 7, 2017 chart counted even though it was released in 2016; similarly the chart from January 6, 2018 will not be considered despite being published in 2017).

Starting with songs 100-91 on Friday, December 22, I will reveal my year-end list 10 songs at a time for 10 days, including personal notes about each hit. This will conclude with the biggest 10 songs of the year - and a Spotify playlist of all 100 songs - on New Year's Eve. Check back each day for a new post.

Once again I will also include, by denotation of an asterisk, the songs that were among my 100 most listened-to songs according to Spotify.

Have a blessed and meaningful holiday season, and enjoy the hits!

As a bonus, here are two songs that just missed the list.

102. Cheap Thrills - Sia feat. Sean Paul

Peak: 1 (4 weeks in 2016); Weeks on chart: 44; December 30 position: NR

The number five song of 2016 spent just enough time in the Hot 100 this year to make the "first two out" of the 2017 countdown. When it finally left the chart two months into the year, this tropical banger left a lasting impression as one of the great songs released in the current decade. "Cheap Thrills" also gave Sia the last Hot 100 number one by a solo female artist for over a year; it wasn't until mid-September that another prominent female artist scored a number one hit in the United States.

101. 2U - David Guetta feat. Justin Bieber

Peak: 16 (April 22); Weeks on chart: 11; December 30 position: NR

It was a relatively quiet year for the Biebs; he's recently been in the news for re-kindling things with multi-time ex Selena Gomez, and occasionally appears in back-page headlines when he gets a little too crazy at the club. Musically, Justin spent most of the year as a featured artist if anything. He was on two of the summer's biggest hits but his first feature of the year, this collab with legendary French DJ David Guetta, peaked when it debuted and never gained any kind of major success. I'm all for admiring beautiful women, but the "2U" music video, featuring numerous female underwear models, is nothing short of objectification. That's not OK ever, but especially in a year in which movements like the Silence Breakers and the #MeToo social campaign have shown just how badly women are objectified - and worse - on a day-to-day basis.

Tomorrow, I'll try to stay off my soapbox as I introduce the first of four #Top100of2017 songs from the hip-hop trio that was a prominent part of this year.
